So this is cute and all but the woman on the left is Edie Windsor, the plaintiff in the the SCOTUS case Windsor v. US that struck down the Defense of Marriage Act in 2013 and paved the way for marriage equality. Her partner, Thea (here on the left) died of ALS some time after they’d been married in Canada and Edie was denied inheritance and survivors benefits so she sued and won. Also fun and adorable fact: you see in those pics how her hair is flipped up on the ends? She wore it like that because Thea loved it. In later pictures from after Thea died you’ll see her with it curled under
